Talnakhite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfide class, with the chemical formula Cu₉Fe₈S₁₆.
It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system (space group I-43m). It is a member of the Chalcopyrite structural group.
Key properties: specific gravity 4.29.
IMA symbol Tlk, IMA status: approved, named in 1967.
Found in concentrations of up to 70% in zones to 12 m thick, in hydrothermal ores (Talnakh area, Russia); in the layered ultramafic Stillwater complex (Nye, Montana, USA); a component of undersea black smokers.
It is found associated with Chalcopyrite, cubanite, djerfisherite, pentlandite, valleriite or mackinawite, magnetite, Ag–Au alloy, Pd–Pb alloy (Talnakh area, Russia).
The name refers to the Talnakh area, Russia, where it occurs.
