Tazzoliite

Tazzoliite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ba₂CaSr₀.₅Na₀.₅Ti₂Nb₃SiO₁₇[PO₂(OH)₂]₀.₅.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system. It is a member of the Pyrochlore structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 6; specific gravity 4.517; White streak; Pearly luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Tzo, IMA status: approved, named in 2011.

Occurs as part of skarn and calc-silicate metamorphic rocks with rare sanidine xenoliths near the contacts with rhyolite and trachite.

It is found associated with Diopside, titanite.

The mineral was named to honor Professor Vittorio Tazzoli (b. 1938), Department of Earth Science, University of Pavia, Italy.
