Thalliomelane

Thalliomelane is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula TlMn⁴⁺₇.₅Cu²⁺₀.₅O₁₆.

It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system (space group I4/m). It is a member of the Coronadite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 5.37.

IMA symbol Tml, IMA status: approved, named in 2019.

Precipitated from a mixture of Cl-, Br-, and I-bearing brines and pore waters during weathering of a sulfide mineral assemblage under semi-arid to arid climate. Tl likely transported from depth along fractures.

It is found associated with Cuprite, malachite, iodargyrite.

Indicates the main constituent (Tl) and the affinity to dark-colored manganese oxides.
