Tomiolloite
Tomiolloite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfate class, with the chemical formula Al₁₂(Te⁴⁺O₃)₅[(SO₃)₀.₅(SO₄)₀.₅](OH)₂₄.
It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P6_3/m).
Key properties: Mohs hardness 3; specific gravity 3.374; White streak; Pearly luster; optically uniaxial.
IMA status: approved, named in 2021.
From oxidation of primary tellurium and/or telluride phases. Al 3+ from the weathering of K-feldspar, a common rock-forming mineral in nearby rhyolite.
It is found associated with On tellurite and quartz.
The name comes from the Nahuatl word for “fuzzy” (“tomiollo”) in allusion to the appearance as near- spherical clusters of crystals.
