Trattnerite

Trattnerite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Fe³⁺₂(Mg₃Si₁₂)O₃₀.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P6/mcc). It is a member of the Milarite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 2.68; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Tra, IMA status: approved, named in 2002.

Found in small cavities within a Si-rich xenolith in nephelinite volcanic rock.

It is found associated with Sanidine, plagioclase, quartz, tridymite, hematite, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, clinoamphibole.

The mineral was named to honor the knowledgeable mineral collector, Walter Trattner, who found the specimen.
