Tritomite-(Ce)

Tritomite-(Ce) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ce₅(SiO₄,BO₄)₃(OH,O).

It crystallizes in the amorphous crystal system. It is a member of the Apatite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5.5; specific gravity 3.72–3.81; Yellowish grey streak; Resinous luster; optically isotropic.

IMA symbol Tto-Ce, IMA status: approved, named in 1987.

Found in nepheline syenite pegmatites (Langesundsfjord, Norway).

It is found associated with Aegirine, leucophanite, analcime, mosandrite, catapleiite (Langesundsfjord, Norway); augite, plagioclase, microcline, allanite, calcite, fluorite.

Its name comes from the Greek for three-fold and to cut, describing the triangular, pseudotetrahedral shape of cavities left by the mineral in gangue, and cerium in the composition.
