Turanite

Turanite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the vanadate class, with the chemical formula Cu²⁺₅(VO₄)₂(OH)₄.

It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system (space group P-1).

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5; specific gravity 4.898; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Trn, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1909.

A rare secondary oxidation mineral in vanadium-bearing mineral deposits.

It is found associated with Tangeite, other vanadates, uranovanadates, malachite, calcite, barite.

The name refers to the Turan region, Kyrgyzstan, where the mineral was first found.
