Uakitite

A vanadium nitride known only from the single Uakit meteorite that fell in Buryatia, Russia.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Uakitite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the native element class, with the chemical formula VN.

It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system (space group Fm-3m). It is a member of the Rocksalt structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 9–10; specific gravity 6.128; White streak; Metallic luster.

IMA symbol Uak, IMA status: approved, named in 2018.

An accessory phase in an iron meteorite. Formed due to high-temperature (>1000 flC) separation of Fe-Cr-rich sulfide liquid from Fe-metal melt.

It is found associated with In troilite-daubréelite (±schreibersite) inclusions (to 100 µm) and in troilite-daubréelite nodules (to 1 cm) in Fe-Ni-metal (kamacite).

The name refers to the Uakit iron meteorite.
