Ungavaite

Ungavaite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfide class, with the chemical formula Pd₄Sb₃.

It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system.

Key properties: specific gravity 7.258; Metallic luster.

IMA symbol Ugv, IMA status: approved, named in 2004.

Occurs as grains in heavy-mineral concentrates derived from drill-core from ultramafic rocks. Likely the product of hydrothermal remobilization of Pd (and possibly Sb) from pre-existing sulfides. Probably developed below 400°C.

It is found associated with Chalcopyrite, a chlorite-group mineral, cobaltite, galena, magnetite, pentlandite, monoclinic pyrrhotite, sphalerite, altaite, Au-Ag alloy, hessite.

The name refers to the Ungava region, in which it was discovered.
