Vicanite-(Ce)

Vicanite-(Ce) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula (Ca,Ce,La,Th)₁₅As⁵⁺(As³⁺,Na)₀.₅Fe³⁺₀.₇Si₆B₄(O,F)₄₇.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group R3m). It is a member of the Okanoganite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5–6; specific gravity 4.2; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Vic-Ce, IMA status: approved, named in 1991.

Occurs as crystals in miarolitic cavities in volcanic ejecta of syenitic composition.

It is found associated with Zircon, thorite, thorian uraninite, betafite, thorian hellandite, titanite, antimonian asbecasite, apatite, stillwellite-(Ce).

The name refers to the Vican volcanic complex (Italy) where the mineral was found. Type: Mineralogical Museum, University of Rome, Italy.
