Vuorelainenite
Vuorelainenite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula Mn²⁺V³⁺₂O₄.
It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system (space group Fd3m). It is a member of the Spinel structural group.
Key properties: specific gravity 4.64.
IMA symbol Vuo, IMA status: approved, named in 1980.
Found in a metamorphosed iron sulfide deposit in association with submarine felsic volcanism (Sätra mine, Sweden); in quartzite schists (Ol’khon Gate Straits, Lake Baikal, Russia).
It is found associated with Pyrrhotite, rutile, pyrophanite, manganoan sphalerite, chalcopyrite, alabandite (Sätra mine, Sweden); rutile, eskolaite, karelianite, schreyerite.
The mineral was named to honor Yrjö Vuorelainen (1922–), Finnish exploration geologist, formerly with the Outokumpu Company, Finland.
