Vurroite
Vurroite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfosalt class, with the chemical formula Pb₂₀Sn₂(Bi,As)₂₂S₅₄Cl₆.
It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group C2/c). It is a member of the Vurroite structural group.
Key properties: specific gravity 6.15; Metallic luster; optically biaxial.
IMA symbol Vur, IMA status: approved, named in 2003.
Occurs as encrustations around fumaroles (400-600 flC) in an active volcanic crater.
It is found associated with Bismuthinite, lillianite, kirkiite, heyrovskýite, galena.
The mineral was named to honor Filippo Vurro, (b. 1940), Professor of mineralogy, University of Bari, Italy, and specialist in the mineralogy and geochemistry of modern volcanic deposits.
