Warkite
Warkite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula Ca₂Sc₆Al₆O₂₀.
It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system (space group P-1). It is a member of the Sapphirine structural group.
IMA symbol Wki, IMA status: approved, named in 2013.
Found in ultra-refractory Ca, Al-rich inclusions (UR CAIs) from CM, CV, CO, and CH chondrite meteorites.
It is found associated with Ti-rich oxide, either perovskite or kangite in cores mantled and rimmed by davisite and/or Sc-diopside (CM, CO, and CV CAIs); perovskite.
The mineral was named to honor David Wark (1939-2005), an Australian cosmochemist, for contributions to research in meteoritics, especially, CAIs in carbonaceous chondrites.
