Wenjiite

Wenjiite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the native element class, with the chemical formula Ti₁₀SiₓPᵧ; x>y, 6≤(x+y)≤7.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P6_3/mcm). It is a member of the Xifengite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 6.5; specific gravity 4.762; Metallic luster.

IMA status: approved, named in 2021.

Found in podiform chromitite, perhaps by crystallization of a ternary Ti-Si-P melt during cooling.

It is found associated with Badengzhuite, zhiqinite, a K-bearing dmisteinbergite-like mineral, corundum (spheroids); deltalumite, jingsuiite, osbornite-khambaraevite.

The mineral was named to honor Bai Wenji (1935-2019), Research Professor, Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, for his research on suture zone ophiolite chromitites in China.
