Wernerkrauseite

Wernerkrauseite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula CaFe³⁺₂Mn⁴⁺O₆.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pnma). It is a member of the Post-spinel structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3; specific gravity 4.66; Black streak; Sub-metallic luster.

IMA symbol Wkr, IMA status: approved, named in 2014.

A late-stage mineral developed during retrograde metamorphism of strongly altered xenoliths within alkaline basalt.

It is found associated with Ettringite-thaumasite, hydrocalumite, jennite, katoite, portlandite, magnesioferrite, perovskite.

The mineral was named to honor Dr. Werner Krause (b. 1949), a chemist with a special interest in the crystal chemistry and morphology of secondary minerals, many new species of which he discovered.
