Yangite

A lead-manganese chain silicate from Namibia's Kombat mine, named for researcher Hexiong Yang.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Yangite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula PbMnSi₃O₈·H₂O.

It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system (space group P-1).

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5; specific gravity 4.14; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Ygi, IMA status: approved, named in 2012.

Found in rhodochrosite-bearing epithermal veins of a polymetallic sulfide deposit.

It is found associated with Melanotekite, rhodochrosite, helvite, galena, barite.

The mineral was named to honor the contributions of Hexiong Yang, Department of Geosciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, to the fields of chain silicates in particular and mineralogy in general.
