Yoderite

Yoderite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula (MgAl₃)(MgAl)Al₂O₂(SiO₄)₄(OH)₂.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/m).

Key properties: Mohs hardness 6; specific gravity 3.39; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Yod, IMA status: approved, named in 1959.

A major phase in quartz-kyanite-talc schist formed under conditions of »10 kbar H2O pressure and 800 ± C.

It is found associated with Kyanite, talc, hematite, quartz.

The name refers to Hatten Schuyler Yoder, Jr. (1921{), petrologist with the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C., USA.
