Ariegilatite

Ariegilatite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula BaCa₁₂(SiO₄)₄(PO₄)₂F₂O.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group R-3m). It is a member of the Nabimusaite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 4–4.5; specific gravity 3.329; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Agi, IMA status: approved, named in 2017.

Found in recrystallized zones of pyrometamorphic, fine-grained spurrite rocks, the high- temperature alteration products of minerals of an early clinker-like association.

It is found associated with Spurrite, calcite, brownmillerite, shulamitite, CO3-bearing fluorapatite, fluormayenite- fluorkyuygenite, periclase, brucite, barytocalcite, baryte.

The mineral was named to honor Arie Gilat (b. 1939), retired from the Geological Survey of Israel, where he was involved in geological mapping, tectonics and geochemical studies.
