Bredigite

Bredigite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ca₇Mg(SiO₄)₄.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group P2nn).

Key properties: specific gravity 3.42; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Bdi, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1948.

Found in contact metamorphosed limestones and dolostones intruded by diabase (Scawt Hill, Ireland) or syenite monzonite (Marble Canyon, Texas, USA).

It is found associated with Larnite, spurrite, gehlenite, melilite, perovskite, magnetite (Scawt Hill, Ireland).

The name refers to Max Albrecht Bredig (1902{), physical chemist, who studied the polymorphism of Ca2 SiO4:.
