Chukanovite

An iron hydroxide-carbonate of the rosasite group — a rare secondary mineral of iron-bearing deposits.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Chukanovite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the carbonate class, with the chemical formula Fe₂(CO₃)(OH)₂.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/a). It is a member of the Malachite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3.5–4; specific gravity 3.6; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Ckn, IMA status: approved, named in 2005.

Found in a terrestrially altered meteorite fragment.

It is found associated with Kamacite, taenite, chromite, troilite, goethite, akaganeite, hematite, hibbingite, reevesite, honessite, undetermined Fe-Ni sulfides.

The mineral was named to honor Nikita V. Chukanov (b. 1953), Russian physicist and mineralogist.
