Coskrenite-(Ce)
Coskrenite-(Ce) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the organic mineral class, with the chemical formula Ce₂(SO₄)₂(C₂O₄)·8H₂O.
It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system (space group P-1). It is a member of the Oxalate structural group.
Key properties: specific gravity 2.881; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.
IMA symbol Ckr-Ce, IMA status: approved, named in 1996.
Formed by weathering of pyritiferous phyllite with evaporation of the resulting sulfate-rich solutions in soil, the rare earths probably derived from monazite and xenotime.
It is found associated with Epsomite, apjohnite.
The mineral was named to honor Dr. T. Dennis Coskren (1942–), geologist and geochemist, Columbia, Maryland, USA, who studied the minerals of Alum Cave Bluff, Tennessee, USA.
