Ferrotaaffeite-6N'3S

Ferrotaaffeite-6N'3S is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula BeFe²⁺₂Al₆O₁₂.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group R-3m). It is a member of the Taaffeite-Ferrotaaffeite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 8–8.5; specific gravity 4.07; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Ftf-6N'3S, IMA status: approved, named in 1979.

Found in the wall zone of a granite pegmatite in “hornblende” gabbro.

It is found associated with Quartz, plagioclase, sillimanite, muscovite, spessartine-almandine, chlorite, biotite, epidote, allanite, nigerite, calcite.

The mineral was named to honor Gunnar Pehrman (1895-?), Emeritus Professor of Mineralogy and Geology, Åbo University, Turku, Finland, for his work on the Kemiö pegmatites.
