Gatedalite

Gatedalite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula ZrMn²⁺₂Mn³⁺₄O₈(SiO₄).

It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system (space group I4_1/acd). It is a member of the Braunite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 4.783; Submetallic luster.

IMA symbol Gtd, IMA status: approved, named in 2013.

Found in hausmannite-bearing skarn in association with a regionally-metamphosed Mn-Fe deposit.

It is found associated with Jacobsite, Mn-calcite, tephroite, Mn-phlogopite, långbanite, pinakiolite, oxyplumboroméite.

The mineral was named to honor amateur mineralogist Kjell Gatedal (b. 1947) from Nora, Örebro, Sweden, for his contributions to the mineralogy of Långban-type deposits.
