Kangite

An exceedingly rare, impure natural scandium oxide — a cubic mineral found in meteorite inclusions.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Kangite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula (Sc,Ti,Al,Zr,Mg,Ca,   )₂O₃.

It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system (space group Ia3). It is a member of the Bixbyite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 3.879.

IMA symbol Kg, IMA status: approved, named in 2011.

An ultra-refractory mineral in an inclusion (ACM-3) in a carbonaceous chondrite meteorite, likely originating through low-temperature oxidation of a Sc- and Ti3+-enriched.

It is found associated with REE-rich perovskite, spinel, davisite.

Derived from “kang, ” the Chinese word for the element scandium.
