Kannanite

Kannanite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ca₄Al₄(MgAl)(VO₄)(SiO₄)₂(Si₃O₁₀)(OH)₆.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pnmm). It is a member of the Ardennite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 6; specific gravity 3.43; Vitreous luster.

IMA symbol Kna, IMA status: approved, named in 2015.

A product of pumpellyite-actinolite-facies metamorphism of Fe-Mn-ore (quartz, hematite, braunite) in metachert.

It is found associated with Ardennite-(V), piemontite, hematite, quartz.

The name is derived from the locality that produced the first specimen, Kannan Mountain, Japan.
