Karchevskyite

Karchevskyite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the carbonate class, with the chemical formula Mg₁₈Al₉(OH)₅₄Sr₂(CO₃)₉(H₂O)₆(H₃O)₅.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system. It is a member of the Hydrotalcite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2; specific gravity 2.21; Vitreous, pearly on cleavage surfaces luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Kcv, IMA status: approved, named in 2005.

A late-stage hydrothermal mineral, finely intergrown with quintinite-3T, in cavities in dolomite in a carbonatite complex.

It is found associated with Dolomite, magnetite, quintinite-3T, strontium carbonate-fluorapatite.

The mineral was named to honor Russian mineralogist Pavel Karchevsky (1976–2002) for significant contributions to the study of carbonatites.
