Mendeleevite-(Ce)
Mendeleevite-(Ce) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Cs₆(Ce,REE,Ca)₃₀(Si₇₀O₁₇₅)(OH,F,H₂O)₃₅.
It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system (space group Pm3). It is a member of the Mendeleevite structural group.
Key properties: Mohs hardness 5–5.5; specific gravity 3.12; White streak; Vitreous luster.
IMA symbol Mdl-Ce, IMA status: approved, named in 2009.
Found in a massif composed of a variety of granitic, alkaline granitic and syenitic pegmatites, various hydrothermal rocks (albitites, fenites) and carbonatites.
It is found associated with Pectolite, and subordinate amounts of quartz, aegirine, fluorite, sogdianite, stillwellite-(Ce), reedmergnerite, leucosphenite, aegirine, polylithionite.
The mineral was named to honor Dmitriy Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834-1907), the Russian chemist who among other accomplishments created the Periodic Table of Elements.
