Mendeleevite-(Nd)

Mendeleevite-(Nd) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Cs₆(Nd,REE,Ca)₃₀(Si₇₀O₁₇₅)(OH,F,H₂O)₃₅.

It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system (space group Pm3). It is a member of the Mendeleevite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5–5.5; specific gravity 3.2; White streak; Vitreous luster.

IMA symbol Mdl-Nd, IMA status: approved, named in 2015.

Found in a pectolite aggregate in quartz-rich rock in association with a complex alkaline massif.

It is found associated with Pectolite, quartz, aegirine, fluorite, khvorovite, mendeleevite-(Ce), sokolovaite, hyalotekite, orlovite, kirchhoffite, pekovite, neptunite, zeravshanite.

The mineral was named to honor Dmitri Mendeleev (1834-1907), the Russian chemist and author of the periodic table of the chemical elements. The suffix indicates the dominant rare earth element.
