Metaschoepite

Metaschoepite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula (UO₂)₈O₂(OH)₁₂·10H₂O.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pbcn). It is a member of the Schoepite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2.5; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Mshp, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1960.

An irreversible alteration product of schoepite from the oxidized zone of uranium-bearing mineral deposits.

It is found associated with Schoepite, paraschoepite.

Its name comes from the Greek meta, for a lower hydration state, and its relation to schoepite.
