Nickelzippeite

Nickelzippeite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfate class, with the chemical formula Ni₂(UO₂)₆(SO₄)₃(OH)₁₀·16H₂O.

It is a member of the Zippeite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2; specific gravity 3.3; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Nizip, IMA status: approved, named in 1971.

Typically as secondary coatings on mine walls, derived from oxidation of uranium-bearing primary Ni–Co sulfides.

It is found associated with Cobalt-zippeite, sodium-zippeite, zippeite, johannite, uranopilite, zeunerite, schröckingerite, bayleyite, chalcanthite, antlerite, siderotil, bieberite.

The name refers to its dominant content of nickel and relation to other zippeite group species.
