Nizamoffite

Nizamoffite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the phosphate class, with the chemical formula Mn²⁺Zn₂(PO₄)₂(H₂O)₄.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pnma). It is a member of the Hopeite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3.5; specific gravity 3; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Niz, IMA status: approved, named in 2012.

A relatively late-formed phase from secondary alteration of primary triphylite and associated sphalerite in the core margin of a granitic pegmatite.

It is found associated with Childrenite-eosphorite, crandallite-goyazite, fairfieldite-messelite, falsterite, fluorapatite, frondelite-rockbridgeite, mitridatite, phosphophyllite, pyrite.

The mineral was named to honor James W. Nizamoff (b. 1971) for his research on pegmatite mineralogy in general and on the phosphate mineralogy of the Palermo pegmatites.
