Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).
Palmierite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfate class, with the chemical formula K₂Pb(SO₄)₂.
It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group R-3m). It is a member of the Palmierite structural group.
Key properties: specific gravity 4.363; Vitreous, pearly on {0001} luster; optically uniaxial.
IMA symbol Pmi, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1907.
A rare fumarolic sublimate.
It is found associated with Aphthitalite, ferronatrite, jarosite, euchlorine, hematite.
The mineral was named to honor Luigi Palmieri (1807–1896), Italian physicist, Director of the Vesuvius Observatory, Italy.
