Parahibbingite

Parahibbingite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the halide class, with the chemical formula Fe²⁺₂(OH)₃Cl.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group R-3m).

Key properties: specific gravity 3.24; Gray (synthetic) streak; Nonmetallic luster.

IMA symbol Phib, IMA status: approved, named in 2020.

Found as a replacement product, either after rock-forming silicates with Fe2+ (e.g., orthopyroxenes), iron meteorites, or man-made iron objects if they were in contact with chloride-rich anoxic brines.

It is found associated with Talc, orthopyroxene (En74–76Fs23–24Wo0–2), cummingtonite, magnesio-ferri-hornblende, actinolite, tremolite; also locally, carbonates (siderite, dolomite.

The prefix indicates the dimorphous relation with hibbingite.
