Paseroite

Paseroite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula Pb(Mn²⁺,   )(Fe³⁺,   )₂(V⁵⁺,Ti⁴⁺,   )₁₈O₃₈.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group R-3). It is a member of the Crichtonite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 6–6.5; specific gravity 4.315; Black streak; Submetallic luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Psr, IMA status: approved, named in 2011.

Found in micro-cavities and fractures in a piece of fossilized wood, presumably precipitated from oxidized ground water.

It is found associated with Quartz, chalcocite, volborthite; more rarely metatyuyamunite, pyrophanite.

The mineral was named to honor Marco Pasero (b. 1958), Professor of Mineralogy, University of Pisa, Italy, for his contributions to mineralogy and crystallography in general.
