Rinneite

Rinneite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the halide class, with the chemical formula K₃NaFe²⁺Cl₆.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group R-3c). It is a member of the Rinneite structural group.

Key properties: Adamantine, commonly silky luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Rne, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1909.

Found as a secondary mineral in marine saline evaporite deposits; as a volcanic sublimate.

It is found associated with Halite, sylvite, kieserite, carnallite, langbeinite, an~ydrite.

The mineral was named to honor Friedrich Wilhelm Berthold Rinne (1863-1933), German crystallographer and petrographer, University of Kiel, Kiel, Germany. Type Material: n.d.
