Schieffelinite

Schieffelinite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfate class, with the chemical formula Pb₁₀Te⁶⁺₆O₂₀(OH)₁₄(SO₄)(H₂O)₅.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group C222_1). It is a member of the Schieffelinite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2; specific gravity 4.98; Adamantine luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Sfl, IMA status: approved, named in 1979.

Found in the oxidized zone of tellurium-bearing hydrothermal precious metal deposits.

It is found associated with Rodalquilarite, girdite, bromargyrite, gold, pyrite, empressite, goethite, quartz.

The mineral was named to honor Edward Schieffelin (1847–1897), a discoverer of the mines at Tombstone, Arizona, USA.
