Schindlerite

Schindlerite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula {(NH₄)₄Na₂(H₂O)₁₀}{V₁₀O₂₈}.

It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system (space group P-1). It is a member of the Pascoite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2; specific gravity 2.461; Yellow streak; Subadamantine luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Shi, IMA status: approved, named in 2012.

Occurs as efflorescences on sandstone in the underground workings of a roll-front type uranium vanadium deposit, from the oxidation of montroseite-corvusite assemblages in a moist environment.

It is found associated with Calciodelrioite, gypsum, huemulite, hughesite, metarossite, pascoite, rossite.

The mineral was named to honor Dr. Michael Schindler (b. 1966), Associate Professor for Environmental Mineralogy, Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.
