Vanadiocarpholite

The straw-yellow vanadium-rich member of the carpholite silicate family.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Vanadiocarpholite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Mn²⁺V³⁺AlSi₂O₆(OH)₄.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Ccca). It is a member of the Carpholite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 3.1; Nearly white streak; Vitreous to silky (acicular aggregates) luster; refractive index 1.692; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Vcar, IMA status: approved, named in 2003.

Remobilized components were concentrated in veins and open fissures in silicified wood during metamorphism of Mn-ore bearing cherts.

It is found associated with Volborthite, quartz.

Prefix, vanadio, identifies essential vanadium in the composition of a phase of the carpholite group.
