Vergasovaite

Vergasovaite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the molybdate class, with the chemical formula Cu₃O(MoO₄)(SO₄).

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pnma). It is a member of the Vergasovaite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 4–5.5; specific gravity 4.32; Pale yellow streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Vgs, IMA status: approved, named in 1998.

A rare sublimation product in fumaroles.

It is found associated with Chalcocyanite, dolerophanite, euchlorine, fedotovite, tenorite, cuprian anglesite, gold.

The mineral was named to honor Dr. Lidia Pavlovna Vergasova (1941–), Institute of Vulcanology, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii, Russia, for her contributions to the mineralogy of that volcanic region.
