Yagiite

A rare osumilite-group cyclosilicate discovered in Spain's Colomera iron meteorite, named for Kenzo Yagi.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Yagiite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula NaMg₂(AlMg₂Si₁₂)O₃₀.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system. It is a member of the Milarite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 2.7; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Yag, IMA status: approved, named in 1968.

Found in silicate inclusions of an iron meteorite, crystallized in a magnesium-rich environment.

It is found associated with Diopside, whitlockite, tridymite, plagioclase, nickel-iron.

The name refers to Dr. Kenzo Yagi, Professor of Geology, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan.
