Emilite

Emilite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfosalt class, with the chemical formula Cu₁₀.₇Pb₁₀.₇Bi₂₁.₃S₄₈.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pmc2_1). It is a member of the Meneghinite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3.5–4; specific gravity 7.025; Grayish black streak; Metallic luster.

IMA symbol Emi, IMA status: approved, named in 2001.

Found in quartz veins cutting a metamorphosed scheelite deposit.

It is found associated with Bismuthinite derivatives in the range krupkaite–hammarite, Ag-bearing lillianite, makovickyite, pavonite, cosalite, galenobismutite, cannizzarite, tetradymite.

The mineral was named to honor Professor Dr. Emil Makovicky (b. 1940) for his contributions to the crystal chemistry and modular description of diverse sulfosalts families.
