Natromarkeyite

Natromarkeyite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the carbonate class, with the chemical formula Na₂Ca₈(UO₂)₄(CO₃)₁₃(H₂O)₂₄·3H₂O.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pmmn). It is a member of the Markeyite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 1.5–2; specific gravity 2.7; White streak; Vitreous, pearly luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Nmk, IMA status: approved, named in 2019.

Secondary phase on asphaltum in sandstones by oxidation of primary uraninite, montroseite, and coffinite in a humid underground environment.

It is found associated with Andersonite, calcite, gypsum.

The prefix indicates the sodium-analogue of markeyite, named for the Markey mine.
